Beware of 'OIC mills', warns IRS
The IRS has issued a warning to taxpayers about the dangers of engaging with promoters who claim to assist with unpaid tax debts, particularly those known as Offer-in-Compromise (OIC) mills. These businesses often charge exorbitant fees and fail to deliver results. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated: "Taxpayers should be cautious of aggressive marketing that can mislead them," highlighting the empty promises made by these mills. While the OIC program can help qualifying taxpayers settle their debts for less than owed, the IRS emphasizes that legitimate services exist, and that many OIC mills exploit vulnerable taxpayers. The IRS has included OIC mills in its annual Dirty Dozen list of scams and has launched a video series to educate the public on these fraudulent practices.
