Trump orders freeze on IRS hiring
President Donald Trump signed several executive orders on his inauguration day, including a hiring freeze for federal employees, particularly affecting the IRS. Mr. Trump stated, "We will also require that federal workers must return to the office in person." The freeze could hinder the IRS's ability to hire temporary workers during tax season. Additionally, Mr. Trump announced plans for an "External Revenue Service" to collect tariffs, aiming to protect American workers, and expressed his intentions to exempt tip income from taxes, although this would require Congressional approval. He has also formally nominated former Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) to serve as IRS commissioner. The executive order nullified the OECD Global Tax Deal, which Trump claimed undermined U.S. sovereignty and competitiveness. "The Global Tax Deal has no force or effect in the United States," the order stated. In response, the OECD said it will continue its work with the U.S. to support international cooperation in tax that promotes “certainty, avoids double taxation, and protects tax bases.”
